Is solar pool heating expensive?

Every Australian family dreams of enjoying their pool in both the warmer and cooler months of the year. However, with installation and running costs of pool heating, you may assume that it isn’t achievable. It is true that there are setup and running costs to consider but solar pool heating is a solution which can make swimming a reality throughout the majority of the year.

Surprisingly solar power is actually an inexpensive way of heating your pool, and can dramatically decrease overall running costs when compared to other heating methods. Solar pool heaters utilise the sun’s energy to circulate heated water throughout your pool. This is why it is so cost effective. Solar pool heating systems work by pumping the pool water through a series of tubes that are connected to solar panels, often located on your roof. The solar panels use the sun’s heat energy to warm the pool water and distribute it back into the pool.

How much does it cost to install and operate solar pool heating?

The cost of purchasing and installing solar pool heating is dependent on the following factors:

  • The size of the pool? Larger pools will require more solar panels.
  • Will you use a swimming pool cover/blanket in conjunction with solar pool heating?
  • Where will the solar panels be placed? Will they be covered by shade at certain times of the day?
  • What is the climate like? Cooler areas may require more solar panels.
  • If the solar panels will be secured to your roof, is the roof pitch effective? Is the roof colour effective for conducting heat?

Solar Pool Heating Solutions start at around $3,000 and can exceed $7,000 for larger pools. The larger the pool, the more it will cost. But it is important to buy the right amount of solar panels for your pool. If you buy less than what is required to lower the price, you will not receive the results you were hoping for and your solar pool heating will be less effective.

When searching for a Solar Pool Heating company, it is important to ensure that they use high quality products that are built to last. You will find that some companies are lower in price, however this is often achieved through supplying and installing products that are of a lower quality. This will then result in less effective pool heating and cost you more in the long run with maintenance and/or replacement costs.

How much does solar pool heating cost to run?

Solar power is a great solution for heating your pool as it has minimal impact on both the environment and your wallet. Once the solar panels are installed, you should expect to pay less than a dollar a day to keep your solar pool heating system running. It is a much cheaper option than gas and electric heat pumps, which can cost around $750 per year to run. A Solar Pool Heating system will generally pay for itself within two years of its installation.

Is solar pool heating worth it?

Solar pool heating not only reduces the cost of heating your pool, but also extends your swimming season, so that you can enjoy swimming beyond the summer months. It is also the most environmentally friendly way to heat your pool, as it utilises the sun’s natural energy. Therefore, using solar power to heat your pool is most definitely worthwhile for people who want to enjoy their pool for up to 9 months of the year.

How do solar pool covers work?

Solar pool covers or blankets, are specially designed sheets that are placed over your pool in order to contain warmth. Solar pool covers work by creating a barrier between the water and the air. This barrier is made up of numerous bubbles that provide a magnifying type effect, which enhance the heating power of the sun’s rays. Additionally, as the blanket covers the pool water, evaporation is greatly reduced, ensuring that the warm water stays in your pool.

Solar energy is the most efficient way to heat your pool. It provides you with a cost effective way to maintain comfortable swimming temperatures all year round. When combining your solar pool heater with a solar pool blanket or cover, you can reduce the workload of your solar pool heater by containing the heat within the water. Resulting in you requiring the solar pool heating less frequently.

Other benefits of solar pool covers include, preventing the loss of cleaning chemicals via evaporation and shielding your water, stopping bugs, leaves and debris from falling in.

So how do you use a solar pool cover?

To prepare your Solar Pool Blanket for installation, lay it out with the bubble side facing downwards over your pool. The bubbles provide separation from the pool water and provide a magnifying effect that will increase the heat gained from the sunlight over your pool.

Depending on the size and shape of your pool, you can trim the pool cover to better fit over your pool. It is most effective if your pool cover fits exactly over the water of your pool and acts like a skin on the surface. Ideally you do not want any extra segments of the cover to extend over the edge of your pool, as this will significantly reduce the effectiveness of your cover by allowing for greater evaporation to occur.

You will want to use your Solar Pool Blanket to cover your pool whenever it is not in use. Of course, daytime is the most important time for heating your pool as it relies on sunlight, and leaving your pool covered overnight will prevent the loss of heat through evaporation. This means that you may be removing and replacing your cover routinely during your swimming season.

How do I remove and store my solar pool cover?
If you swim in your pool regularly, removing the Solar Pool Blanket can be tedious and reduce the enjoyment you get from your swim. In order to more easily remove your pool blanket, you have some options available:

  • You can trim the blanket into smaller pieces. These smaller sections can be removed individually with less difficulty.
  • You can pull the end of the solar Pool Blanket from the pool and fold sections at the end of the pool.
  • You can install a Solar Blanket Reel so your blanket can be rolled up neatly.

Solar Blanket Reels are a practical way for you and your family to remove, store and replace your blanket on your pool each time you want to swim. The reel can be permanently installed at the side of the pool or often reels can be wheeled into place prior to use.

Whether you decide to buy a Pool Cover Reel or not, it is important that you remove the cover completely before anyone swims in the pool. If anyone is to swim whilst the pool cover is on, there is a high danger of that person being trapped under the blanket.

Solar Pool Blankets are an effective and convenient addition to any solar pool heating solution. By trapping the heat in the pool you lose very little water via evaporation, and ensure that the heating system is working to its full potential.
